Why I Started Highline Virtual LLC: From Classroom Teacher to Grant Writer Helping Organizations Grow

Sometimes the path we imagine for ourselves takes an unexpected turn and leads us exactly where we are meant to be.

When I started my career, I never imagined I would become a grant writer and business owner. I thought I knew exactly what my future looked like: teaching young children, making a difference in their lives, and spending my days helping them learn and grow.

Today, I still do that work but in a different way. Through Highline Virtual LLC, I help nonprofits and small businesses find opportunities, get organized, and share their stories with the people who can help them make an impact.

A Love for Teaching Started Early

My passion for education began long before I stepped into my own classroom.

When I was five years old, my mother started running a daycare out of our home. Growing up surrounded by young children, learning activities, and daily routines sparked something in me. I knew from an early age that I wanted to work with children and be a teacher in some capacity.

That passion led me to pursue a degree in education, and eventually, I became an elementary school teacher. For nearly 10 years, I had the privilege of teaching students in kindergarten through second grade.

Those years taught me so much about patience, communication, creativity, and the importance of meeting people where they are. I loved watching students gain confidence, overcome challenges, and discover new skills.

A New Chapter: Becoming a Mom

When the time came to start my own family, I faced a difficult decision. I chose to step away from the classroom so I could stay home with my own children while they were growing up.

It was one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made, but I also knew I wanted to continue using my skills and creativity in a meaningful way.

That opportunity came in a place I never expected: grant writing.

The Grant That Changed Everything

During my time at home with my children, I had the opportunity to write a grant proposal for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

I developed a fishing program called “Moms and Minnows on Lake Mille Lacs” a program designed to connect Cub Scouts and their mothers through outdoor experiences, fishing education, and quality time together.

The grant was awarded, and we were able to bring the program to life for 70 youth and their moms.

That experience changed my career path.

I discovered that grant writing combined many of the things I loved: creativity, storytelling, problem-solving, community impact, and helping others achieve their goals.

I was hooked.

Starting Highline Virtual LLC

When my youngest child started kindergarten, I faced another decision: return to the classroom or create something new.

I chose entrepreneurship.

I started Highline Virtual because I wanted to help organizations do more good. I wanted to use my writing skills, educational background, and passion for community impact to support nonprofits and small businesses that are working hard to make a difference.

Nearly four years later, I continue to wake up every day grateful for the work I get to do.

Helping Nonprofits and Small Businesses Make an Impact

Today, Highline Virtual provides grant writing services and more to organizations that need help telling their stories and reaching their goals.

I understand that many nonprofit leaders and small business owners wear many hats. They are passionate about their missions, but they may not always have the time, resources, or experience needed to write successful grants, develop outreach strategies, or strengthen their online presence.

That is where I come in.

My goal is simple: help organizations spend less time searching for resources and more time creating meaningful change.

Why I Love What I Do

The most rewarding part of my work is knowing that the words I write can help create real opportunities.

A successful grant can provide books for children, support families navigating challenges, fund community programs, expand services, or help a small business grow.

Every proposal tells a story. Every organization has a mission worth sharing. And every community has people who need support.

I am honored to help connect those pieces.

The Journey Continues

I never planned to become a grant writer or start my own company. But looking back, every step prepared me for this work, the lessons I learned as a child in my mother’s daycare, the years I spent teaching, the experience of raising my own children, and that first successful grant application.

Highline Virtual was built from a love of learning, helping others, and creating opportunities.

And I cannot wait to see what comes next.
